It’s timeeeeee—imagine Mariah Carey hitting that high note.

November has arrived, and with it comes the unmistakable feeling that the holiday season is just around the corner. The days grow shorter, the air turns crisper, and the familiar tunes of music start filling the background. It’s time to embrace the joy and warmth that this season brings, but it’s also a moment to recognize the challenges that come with it, especially the impact of shorter daylight on our mood and well-being.

As someone who cares deeply about your health and happiness, I want to share some thoughts on how to navigate this time of year, especially if you find yourself feeling low or sluggish. Plus, a quick note: I will be off from November 25th to December 1st. During that time, I won’t be available. So if you face an emergency, please contact your local authorities immediately.

Understanding the impact of shorter days

As November progresses, the daylight hours shrink significantly. This change can affect many people’s mood and energy levels. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that occurs at a specific time of year, usually in the fall and winter months when daylight is limited. Symptoms can include feeling tired, low motivation, sadness, and difficulty concentrating.

If you notice these feelings creeping in, you’re not alone. Research shows that about 5% of adults in the U.S. experience SAD, with many more feeling milder forms of seasonal blues. Understanding this can help you take steps to manage it effectively.

Practical ways to boost your mood this season

There are several simple strategies you can use to help counteract the effects of shorter days and keep your spirits high:

  • Maximize natural light: Open your curtains as soon as you wake up. Spend time outside during daylight hours, even if it’s cloudy. A 20-30 minute walk can make a big difference.

  • Use light therapy: Special light boxes imitate natural sunlight and can aid in regulating your mood. Using one for around 20-30 minutes each morning can be highly effective. They are available for purchase on Amazon or similar stores.

  • Stay active: Exercise releases endorphins, which improve mood. Try to keep up with your regular physical activity or start a new routine that fits your schedule.

  • Maintain a healthy diet: Eating balanced meals with plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains supports your overall well-being.

  • Prioritize sleep: Shorter days can disrupt sleep patterns. Aim for consistent bedtimes and create a relaxing nighttime routine.

Enjoying the holiday bliss with loved ones

The holiday season is a perfect time to connect with family and friends. Taking time to enjoy the company of those around you can lift your spirits and create lasting memories. Here are some ideas to make the most of this special time:

  • Plan small gatherings: Even simple get-togethers with close friends or family can bring joy and comfort.

  • Create new traditions: Whether it’s baking cookies, watching a favorite holiday movie, or decorating together, new rituals can add meaning to the season.

  • Practice gratitude: Taking a moment each day to reflect on what you’re thankful for can improve your outlook and reduce stress.

  • Give back: Volunteering or helping others in need can provide a sense of purpose and connection.

Embracing the season with balance and care

November marks the start of a beautiful but sometimes challenging time of year. It’s a chance to slow down, appreciate the people in your life, and find joy in the little moments. At the same time, it’s important to recognize how the changing season affects your mood and energy.

By using practical strategies to manage seasonal changes and making time for connection and self-care, you can enjoy the holiday bliss fully. Remember, it’s okay to ask for help or take a break when you need it.
